SHOW JUMPING
Show Jumping is one of the most popular activities in the Irish Pony Club and is offered at many levels to members.
Show Jumping activities in the Irish Pony Club varies from the youngest members jumping small crosspoles to the senior members jumping 1.20m.
Show Jumping will often take place at working rallies as part of the instruction given. Some branches organise special show Jumping rallies as well as show jumping training sessions. Fun competitions like Mini/Midi/Maxi show jumping competitions are often run by branches and are sometimes open to neighbouring branches. Show Jumping is also part of Eventing and Championships.
The Show Jumping Championships which are held at the IPC Festival are divided into the following different competitions:
Junior Show Jumping (Robbie Bailey)
Intermediate Show Jumping (John Ledingham)
Members Show Jumping
Senior Individual
Each Area of the IPC runs an Area Qualifier to decide which branches will represent their Area at the championships. The teams placed first and second and third at the qualifier will go on to compete at the Championships. Below is a brief guide to these competitions.
Junior Show Jumping Competition
Robbie Bailey
The final for this competition is held at the Pony Club Festival. It is a team competition. There are four members on a team and the format for this competition can be found in the relevant section of the IPC Current Rule Book. To qualify for this competition a team must be placed first, second or third at their Area Qualifier. This competition is for riders Under 14 years old on 1st January of the competition year. They must also be C Test standard but must not have their C+ Test. Ponies must be 5 years or over. The jumps have a maximum height of 90cm. Ponies/horses who have competed and jumped over 1metre in the current or previous year are not eligible. You should check the current Show Jumping Rule Book for further details. This competition is for the Robbie Bailey Cup. This competition is named in honor of Robbie Bailey who was D.C. of the Laois Branch. He was wise and gracious, knowledgeable and modest man, and was a source of admiration to everyone who came into contact with him. He instilled in younger members, the art, skills and joys of horsemanship. He died in 1983. To ensure it remains a true Junior Competition, the age remains Under 14, whilst junior age is Under 15 for Horse Trials, Combined Training and Hunter Trials. The same combination of pony/horse and rider from a winning Robbie Bailey team (in any year) is not eligible to compete.
Intermediate Show Jumping Championship
John Ledingham Cup
The final for this competition is held at the Pony Club Festival. This is a team competition. There are four members on team and the format for this competition may be found in the relevant section of the IPC Show Jumping Rule Book. To qualify for this competition a team must be placed at their Area Qualifier. This competition is for riders Under 21 years old on 1st January of the competition year. They must have passed their C Test but must not have their B Test. Ponies must be 5 years or over. The jumps have a maximum height of 1m. Ponies/horses who have competed and jumped over 1.10 metre in the current or previous year are not eligible. You should check the current Show Jumping Rule Book for further details. A member of a winning Intermediate Team (in any year) is not eligible. The Irish Pony Club named this competition after John Ledingham. He is a former pony club member and is one of the best know and most successful Irish Army International Riders.
Senior Show Jumping Championship
This is a team competition. Riders must be over the age of 12 and under the age of 21 years on the 1st January of the current year. Competitors in this competition must have passed their 'C' Test. This competition is run over two rounds with maximum fence heights 1.10m in the first round and 1.15m in the second round (two fences may be a 1.20m at the discretion of the course builder. You should check the current Show Jumping Rule Book for criteria for horse/pony eligibility. The winning team in this competition may receive an invitation from the UK Pony Club to travel to the UK for the UKPC Championships to represent the Irish Pony Club. Irish Pony Club teams competing in the UK have had much success over the years. Senior Individual Show Jumping Competition
This competition is for competitors over the age of 12 and under the age of 23 yrs. on the 1st January of the current year. Competitors in this competition must have passed their "C" test. For eligibility of Horses and Ponies please see the relevant section of the IPC Show Jumping Rule Book. This is an individual competition. Riders must be over the age of 12 and under the age of 21 years on the 1st January of the current year. Competitors in this competition must have passed their 'C' Test. This competition is run over two rounds with maximum fence heights 1.10m in the first round and 1.15m in the second round (two fences may be a 1.20m at the discretion of the course builder. This competition is run after the Team Championships over a new course. It is open to all qualified branch members under 23 yrs. (with C Test) including those who take part in the Senior Team competition. Team horses are eligible but riders may choose a fresh horse provided they have ridden that horse at the Area Qualifier. Riders may only compete once in the Individual competition. You should check the current Show Jumping Rule Book for criteria for horse/pony eligibility.
